Emily has had Type 1 diabetes for three years now, over half her life. She has amazed us with her strength and spirit. Emi just started Kindergarten and has shown everyone that she is just a normal little girl. She has to leave class to check her blood sugar every day, but takes this in stride and has excelled at school and made lots of new friends.
In February 2007, Emily got the flu. What would have been a day at home for most kids, ended with her in the hospital for several days. She was severely dehydrated and we couldn’t keep her blood sugar down. Emi was pretty out of it that first day in the hospital. After a short time, her Grandma came over with a surprise. She had spent the past two days busily sewing a special tea set for her. It was soft and washable, perfect for playing with in the hospital bed. Since then, Emi has spent hours playing tea party with her little sister Kaitlyn.
